you should try a no kill shelter like, animal defense league or a humane society. they have them in most city's
He was doing it for community service. I'm betting they only allow certain places for the credit. For us, our local pound only allowed prisoners or other government officials to work there. No time donations were allowed by the general public. This makes me uneasy about how "legal" the business is being done there, actually. (I.e. The idea of the common public seeing the atrocities there would cause uprising.) Either way, I'm guessing he had to do community service as a sentence punishment not just to do it as a random person asking to donate his time.
This is a way terrible FML. Seriously. It may should have been expected, though. Pounds are always doing shit like this, and if you've ever visited one, you know it's not a place to go if you're an animal lover. (My mom, bro and I just went to one a month ago and wound up adopting 4 out of pity. It was terrible there; the barking, the smell of death, the knowledge that many of them ((including ours)) would be dead by now. Feeling pressured into adopting ones that would make good pets, but aren't necessarily for US. Humane Society for us from now on...) What's terrible even more so than just killing them off, is that they just go to waste in a landfill. Wouldn't it be a good idea to INSTEAD kill the animals off without poison in order to feed to homeless people who have NOTHING? It's a waste of resources, honestly. And at least the animal's life is going to use if you eat it. But people are "too emotional" about eating dog or cat in the US.
Sounds like an fml for the Dogs :(
I work at an animal control. The state will not allow us to bury/ cremate them ourselves. You want to stop this landfill issue: GET YOUR ANIMALS SPAY/NEUTERED!!!
Exactly. Most of these people have no common sense. What else is supposed to happen to these animals that don't get adopted? These places can't keep them forever. The only solution is for people to take responsibility and get their animals spayed/neutered. But most people are too stupid and lazy to do what's right, in this situation and every other.
Why would they not let you cremate? That sounds like a much better idea than dumping them in a landfill, in my opinion.
due to the large amount animals that are abandoned/abused/surrendered(by their owners!!!) and stray animals running in the streets, my state will not allow shelters/animal control to dispose of any animal. i am glad to say, though, that since i started in november and the new admin has never put down a health adoptible animal. the only ones we euthanized have been ill or so aggressive that they can't be reformed. BTW...Anyone interested in a sweet bull mastiff named Tinkerbell (109lbs) or a G. shep/st benard mix(126lbs)? I've gotta try.
Why would you accept any position, volunteer or otherwise, without learning the responsibilities of the position? Even animals in no-kill shelters sometimes need to be euthanize because there's no treatment left and the animal is in pain. It's not pleasant, but you shouldn't have signed on for it without learning what your responsibilities would be.
Most SPCAs and humane societies are kill facilities. Choose a place to support based on their kill rate, compassion, and resources: animal ratio. There are some no kill facilities that take in millions, but only save a few hundred dogs. Some animal controls are dealing with tens of thousands of dogs the best they can with a severely limited budget.
The dog pound has the reputation of euthanizing dogs so it's odd that you're clueless with what goes on there but FYL for it happening on your very first day. I feel that one of the main problems is that pet owners do not take proper care of their pets and get them fixed. Then you have the people, that do not want dogs unless they are pure breeds. The mix breeds/mutts are not considered a pet of value. It's a shame. Mix breeds have been know to be more intelligent than pure. But people are snobs!
call animal control or ASPCA whet ever the local animal cops are do something go on Twitter, Facebook spread the message OP
