Today, I started my community service at the dog pound. I like animals so I thought it would be a good place to do it. As I arrived they were throwing dogs that had been euthanized into a dump truck to be taken to a landfill. That was my job for the day. FML

Community Service for some crime you committed or is this badly worded volunteer work? If it's the former then ydi. A punishment should be punishing.

Could be for another reason.. my high school required 100 hours of community service in order to graduate.

Community service and volunteer work are basically synonyms idiot. Just because he chose to use community service doesn't mean he is a convict.

It's easy to throw around fancy words like "humane" and "no kill shelter", but actually dealing with thousands of unwanted animals roaming around a city is another story. It's nice to house strays, but what happens when there are far more animals than the facility can possibly accommodate? Letting them roam free isn't an option--the very reason animal control exists is to cut down on the problems associated with too many animals running around. There are also far more strays than people willing to adopt. The unfortunate fact remains that euthanasia is really the only practical solution.

Seriously? A landfill? Isn't that a biological hazard? I'd think they'd be on the way to be cremated...

It is... actually landfills won't take dead animals.

They do that is where we send our animals too.

Who do you think is going to pay for them to be cremated? If pet owners have the money to have their animals cremated, they don't take them to the pound. If the pound had to pay for it, they'd be unable to treat sick animals because all their funds would be tied up in dead animals. Landfills won't accept dead animals mixed in with garbage, but allow special circumstances for shelter/vet disposals. They aren't just thrown out on top of all the other garbage, they're basically put in a mass grave and covered in earth. It's why they store the animals in a freezer/cooler until there's a "truck load" to dispose of. It's no more biologically hazardous than any human funeral.

the creme de la creme of ghettoness, that is probably the most awesomest quote I have ever heard!!!

This is in NO way a YDI, but what exactly did you think working in a pound would be like? That's what pounds do. It's heartbreaking, but it's a well-known fact.

at least they euthanized them before they were put into the trash truck

Ohio is a pet-friendly state, for the most part. Here in Cinci, there aren't very many kill-shelters and there are myriad pet fostering programs. Our SPCA is also non-kill. There are some pounds around that are crappy, and there's a few shops that unfortunately deal with puppy mills, but overall there's a good chance that dogs and cats around here will not end up getting euthanized. It gets a little worse as you get closer to the inner city, of course, but on the edges and in the burbs no-kills are pretty much all you can find. Some states are unfortunately not as lucky as us.

87: My first dog Roscoe was mixed with pit bull and lab. One time I forgot to fill his water bowl. he picked it up with his mouth, walked over to me and dropped it at my feet and looked at me like "I'm thirsty dammit!" He lived for 16yrs. great dog.

u had a really smart dog :) sorry he died though :( I don't know what I'm going to do when my dogs die...
