Because dignity and self respect doesn't pay bills. He could easily break up with her if she refuses the money anyway so he gets what he wants. Breaking up without taking the money is even more giving him what he wants, unless the money is stolen.

I'm thinking we again have a fine example of a young woman who cannot take a joke. Even in a bad relationship, guys might still make this sort of macabre joke. And if he is serious, he's an idiot of vast proportion, which is also funny and a little pathetic.
