Today, my dad gave me a promise ring on my one-year anniversary with my boyfriend and made me swear I would wait until marriage. Four hours later, he walked in on us having sex in my bedroom. FML

Don't make promises you can't keep. If you can't avoid having sex, don't tell your dad you can't. He's going to be more disappointed if you promise him and break the promise than if you just tell him you can't make the promise to begin with. Therefore, it's your own stupid fault for picking the path of lying.

At no point is forcing someone to swear an oath giving them trust. OP didn't break any trust, she just ignored someone demanding she abide by a religious belief she didn't hold, which is totally reasonable. Kids aren't required to believe the same religious things their parents do, no matter how much their parents demand it.

Your own fault. You need to have a heart to heart with your Dad. Sounds like he just wants to protect his little girl but promise rings are a load of hookum and don't really mean anything. Especially when given by your father.

Actually isn't a promise ring what a guy gives to a girl before they get engaged? A ring a Dad gives to his daughter for those waiting till marriage kinda purpose is a purity ring... Anyway...that sucks...lol...but you should have been honest with him and just rejected the ring...or did you honestly think he would never notice if you guys were doing it IN HIS HOUSE???
