Today, I asked my girlfriend to marry me. She said no because she doesn't want to be tied down for the rest of her life. We already have 3 children, a mortgage, and joint bank accounts. How much more tied down could we possibly get? FML

Wait, so you never discussed the possibility of marriage together BEFORE you went and had children, and created a joint bank account? If you guys end up splitting you don't have anything to protect your share of the assets.

I have a friend like that. When I got married she was like "Well, I'm happy for you but personally I'm just too independent to be married". She's been with her boyfriend for ten years, they have a house and two kids together...how is a ring and a piece of paper going to make her any less independent..?

sorry to hear OP, dont listen to some of the ppl saying its signs of her wanting out. my and my huaband had 2 kids and everything before we got married too. we even had our taxes done jointly. we were engaged for a long time and he disnt even want to do more than that. eventually he got used to the idea of marriage, but i had to let him get used to it on his own. she just might be comfortable with the way things are now.

Insurance, I suppose it's the last real reason to get married. Some do it for religion and I guess enough of the world just feels like it is part of the natural order of things you do as a human...
