Today, I decided to upgrade to Windows 10. I wanted to keep my old files on the current hard drive, I clicked on the keep old files option. Thanks to Windows, I lost everything. FML

YOU HAVEN'T LOST EVERYTHING!!! in events like this Windows creates a backup. you'll find ALL your files in the "windows.old" folder. just search it up!!!

Don't trust them when it says it'll retain your old files, you need to always back up your files before upgrading or changing your OS. Sometimes Windows is nice enough to put your files in a folder on the Windows drive called "windows.old" which would be where everything you had on that drive before would be saved. However I don't know if they kept that feature in Windows 10.

That sucks! I upgraded today as well. It didn't ask me if I wanted to keep my old files, but it kept them all anyways, in the same places, weird.

I would go insane if I lost all of my files

Depending on your original OS you may have had to do a clean install. If you were on XP, that would be the case. Vista and 7 are able to install the OS over top them, so you shouldn't have lost everything. IGN actually had an article with steps on how to prepare for Win10.

Ther is a recovery option to go back to the old OS. With a bit luck you can get your lost files back. Is there a windows.old folder in C:/ ?

Might want to switch to Mac... No, just kidding.

Really? It saved all of mine. Maybe try a full system restore to before you updated windows os and then back up your files before reinstalling Windows 10. Good luck!

As a computer repair tech, I've had a few come in blue screening with all the data gone. Not too uncommon, actually. Usually, it seems to be a computer that the manufacture (such as Dell) suggests not upgrading to 10, due to "driver problems," aka this computer sucks too much for 10.

FYL for losing your files when Windows said you wouldn't... YDI for not backing up your files before installing anything...

You back the folders yourself windows don't do it for you

That's why you make a backup before you do something like that. The upgrade even tells you to do that...
