Then work on it, OP. I don't think this is a YDI or FYL situation. Just communicate with each other about what you like, get to know each other sexually and practice. This could be perfect for you given a little work :-)

Well, it sounds like you just got out of the friendzone and that's awesome... Sex is good but it's not the best thing ever, my first time was horrible too. He could be a virgin and didn't told you anyhting to not make you feel insecure, I did that. Plus, perfection only comes through practice.

They are NOT always disastrous, Though I've heard enough horror stories to realize that I'm one of the lucky few to have been blown away the first time around with that special someone. I agree she shouldn't give up hope though, everyone can improve, it just takes honesty and dedication!

I have somewhat of a suggestion. Ask him if he likes roleplaying (or if you think he does, surprise him with it). Be the sexy teacher whilst he is the inexperienced student. (I believe that's a common fantasy). Then teach him what you like.
