Today, I ordered a Diet Coke with my meal from a fast food restaurant. Turns out, they didn't give me diet. My blood sugar spiked and I was sick for hours later. I'm a diabetic. FML

Geez there are a lot of idiots on here shooting their mouths off. I don't profess to be an expert on diabetes or anything, but I know this much... 1) Some diabetics do not have as good a sense of taste as the rest of us. It is quite plausible that if his taste has been affected by his illness, or if he simply doesn't drink soda very often, he might not have recognised the difference between diet and regular. Also post-mix coke that's been too watered down can taste like diet sometimes. So stop with the "fake, you would have tasted the difference". 2) Sometimes it isn't as easy as just having an extra shot of insulin. Some people do not use insulin shots as treatment for their diabetes, and some people with really unstable diabetes will take a lot longer to pull out of a hyper/hypo even if they have treated themselves. So stop with the "YDI you should have just had extra insulin". 3) There is more to the world than America. Just coz most American restaurants allow you to fill your own cup doesn't mean that restaurants everywhere else do the same. I know in Australia most fast-food outlets don't allow you to fill up, and from the comments on here, it sounds like it's the same in France. So you can stop with the "Fake/YDI everywhere lets you fill your cup yourself". 4) Just coz he's eating at a fast food outlet doesn't mean he's eating unhealthy stuff. Maybe he had a salad, or just a kid's sized burger. Or maybe he was just having a snack, like a small fries. So stop with the "YDI for eating fast food". Besides, it's not that outrageous to expect your order to be filled properly for regular people with regular orders, so I think someone whose health is at risk has even more right to be upset when their order is not filled properly. If someone with a peanut allergy went to a restaurant and specifically requested a meal without peanuts, but then got served peanuts in their meal, would you say "YDI for eating out"?? Of course not. The restaurant has a duty of care.

And one more thing: hyperglycemia is the worst feeling I have ever experienced. I'll do anything I can to avoid it, and I'm sure OP feels the same way. Do you really think he could have prevented it, and was just too lazy to do so? No. I think if OP could have known and done something about it, he would have.

Not all diabetics use insulin, I don't. I control mine with diet, exercise, and oral medicine.

Yes, but you can plan for some amounts of sugar. He likely took twelve or so CCs of insulin and assumed there would be no sugar. Had he known, he could have bumped it to seventeen CCs, effectively neutralizing the amount of sugar entering his bloodstream.

Gotta love all the people calling for the OP to sue, gotta love America! Unless it was done on purpose, and it could be proven there would be no way that would ever fly. Think about it, they screwed up a drink order, that's all. Yes it's bad because they're diabetic, but they have no way of knowing! Mistakes happen, doesn't mean you need to pull a lawsuit out of your ass every time something mildly inconvenient happens to you.

You couldn't taste the very obvious difference between sugary soda and fake sugar soda? If you ONLY drink diet soda, the regular soda would taste completely different!
