Today, I received an email from an angry parent, demanding that I give his daughter an A on a project which I had given her a 0 on. The project was to pick an article related to science and to write an essay on it. Hers was a hoax article relating to Ebola patients rising from the dead. FML

It's one thing to politely ask you to allow his daughter to redo the assigned work with a proper article, and it's another thing to "demand" a near-perfect score for nowhere near acceptable work...

It really amazes me how ignorant some people can be.

That parent seems like one of the idiots that shouldn't have bred.

How DARE you not give that poor child an A? What do you mean they didn't do the assignment correctly? Obviously you didn't explain it right and my baby deserves to pass. I'm sorry OP... sometimes parents suck. I definitely don't miss that about teaching

I'm pretty sure that was an actual story tho

It was a story on the news. Mainly people thought the person was dead but he or she was in a coma. The rising from the dead was the perception of those onlookers. Being thought of as dead is a historical pastime- so much so that Edgar Allan Poe made sure he was buried with a bell above ground. He was terrified of being buried alive. Depending on the perspective of the article this could be a scientific article. Just depends.

Well, the article she wrote on was related to science in some form, but OP is in charge here so I'm not gonna argue about it.

Pseudo-science is not science.

Psudo science is the reason many still distrust scientific discoveries.

#19, thank you. god, people think things like non sciences and pseudo sciences count as related to science. People rising from the dead from ebola definitely does not fall close to the realm of science.

Did she write a good essay? it would seem to me you asked for an essay about an article related to science. if you didnt say the article had to be true that YDI. even if you did, the assignment was about the essay and not the article.

There was probably some form of rubric or grading guidelines OP used and even if she did write a satisfactory essay, it could have not met the requirements.

It doesn't matter it isn't the assignment. A hoax article doesn't classify as science article and would generally have little actual science in it. It fails and the student got what she deserved.

@33 Why are you so certain it's a hoax?

#67 because it is. Did you actually think that it was serious?

Didn't specify it had to be true? What idiot would assume it's okay to write an essay about pseudoscience?

Any science related article MUST be based entirely on facts otherwise its the ramblings of psychos designed to terrorize gullible imbiciles like the student.

Not a hoax dumbass it's in South Africa? You're a teacher, do your teaearch

Read the WHOLE FML before you comment.

So was she being graded on the merit of the article, or her actual essay? If you weren't clear at the beginning of the assignment, YDI and FHerL.

The article, no matter how well written, was based on absolutely no science and therefore did not meet the requirements. Assuming the student knew this was a hoax she deserved far less than 0 but sadly that is as low as a teacher can go.

Actually, zombies have existed. They were used as slaves on plantations. I don't recall exactly which neurotoxin was used, but when carefully administered, it made highly suggestible, mindless drones out of previously healthy individuals. In a way, they were almost like lobotomites.

people had walked around for centuries in a trans state caused by disease and virus. the article she had written the paper on DID exsist. there was a verified first person newspaper read that was written in africa after the occurance of the strange inccodent. it seems life is crazier and more unpredictable than fiction. so stop beong so ignorant. your close minded

Helicopter parents, everyone's greatest annoyance.

I don't get what all the hype is about Ebola. There was one case, and it's less likely to spread than the common cold.
