Today, I received an email from an angry parent, demanding that I give his daughter an A on a project which I had given her a 0 on. The project was to pick an article related to science and to write an essay on it. Hers was a hoax article relating to Ebola patients rising from the dead. FML

It's one thing to politely ask you to allow his daughter to redo the assigned work with a proper article, and it's another thing to "demand" a near-perfect score for nowhere near acceptable work...

It really amazes me how ignorant some people can be.

@40, there are quite a few more than one case, or are you going to ignore West Africa? and the hype is that there is no known vaccine and the early symptoms are much the same as lesser diseases. Yeah, living in our western world means the chances are much less, but we should still concern ourselves with those at higher risks.

Soorry but she did the assignment she should get some sort of grade for it.

She did. . .a zero. Students aren't entitled to any grade, they have to earn them. So long as the OP was consistent across all the students, he should own his grading process. Most education, at the end of the day regardless of what you actually learn, is about becoming a critical thinker and learning how to find answers to your questions. In that vein, the student epically failed. Hopefully the grade is a wake-up call.

How about the fact that it's been in Africa for years, yet now everyone seems to care about a vaccine because it affects them...

You didn't specify whether or not it had to be something factual, only related to science in one way or another. With Ebola currently on the forefront of most scientific conversation at present and assuming she analysed it scientifically it has been completed as required by the instructions and should be marked accordingly. If you want to avoid law suits and such then perhaps you should be a little more specific when setting assignments.

You are the parents that ruin the education system for students who actually follow the assignment and don't look for loopholes.

Some people in this world should not be parents if they're that stupid.

Youre all being so judgemental, I remember back in highschool whenever a teacher gave me an assignment I always tried to go as way out there as possible while still following criteria, clearly the daughter did this, did exactly what was told of her but purposefuly picked a hoax article, as its still a theory. she did everything right the teacher shouldve atleast given her a passing grade.

So basically you looked for loopholes and laughed when the teacher was forced to accept it.

She is being judgmental, because the student failed to follow the assignment: scientific article has nothing to do with zombies. Zombies have actually been scientifically disproven

I'd say it would depend on the age. We started writing essays in third grde. A third grader may not have known the article was a hoax. If the kid was old enough to know better, you should allow her to rewrite the assignment on an actual scientific study (since she at least tried and wrote an essay.)

42- there was some article of an "Ebola zombie" coming back from the dead with a picture of a World War Z zombie on it. As stupid as it sounded there were a lot of idiots who actually believed it was true.

It may be a hoax, but she still did do a report, and if she showed some sort of way that is science related, it's not right for you to fail her. If she actually tried and related it to science and you still did that then your a terrible teacher.

She was assigned a science article and she picked a fiction piece. That means she did not do the assignment, so she deserves a 0. What if she had been assigned to write an essay about To Kill a Mockingbird and she wrote one about a Batman comic instead? Would he be a "terrible teacher" for failing her on that too?
