I always find it cute how some idiots think a tip should be propotionate to bill size, rather than being related to worker performance. I don't care how much I'm spending, if you're a bad server, you're getting no tip. Maybe they should have given more, but then again, from the sound of your story, you're just a terrible server.
You shouldn't have to deal with that, hopefully you'll find something better.
That's when you say "here, you need this more than I do" and you HAND it back to them. You don't have an added gratuity on tables larger than 5.
Many restaurants impose a fixed tip for large groups to avoid exactly that situation. Silver lining is to find one to work at; getting fired is a blessing in disguise.
The lack of pay sucks, and the family could maybe pay more. But a $750 meal is what, a $120 tip? Christ, I have a Master's degree and I make about $160 a day. No waitress needs to expect that much of a tip. 50 cents is certainly super small, but maybe the family wasn't wealthy and this was a once a decade family reunion or something. After spending $750 on food, are they expected to pay 40-$120 just because waitresses don't get paid wages? Any company that has nearly-$1,000 meals can afford to pay its staff more than $2 an hour.
Every restaurant I know of has a mandatory tip amount included in the bill for large parties. So either you work at a place that's a little behind the times or this is bs. No way to call on this one.
That sucks. I understand why you did that because you worked your butt off and only got a (if you even count it as a tip at all) small tip. That small of a tip is insulting. Do I condone your actions? Absolutely not, but I understand why you did it. You had every right to be upset, though not assault the people
People who aren't understanding this FML have never worked in the restaurant business or aren't from a country where tipping is a social mandate. It's brutal and it takes a lot out of servers, demanding much but giving little in return. Servers are paid less than minimum wage - usually less than $2 an hour - so their income as servers is almost entirely reliant on their customers to appreciate their service. To that family, the OP's service was ultimately worth 50 cents. That's bullshit, tbh. "But what if the family couldn't afford the tip?" They should have considered that before going out and/or ordering as much as they did. It's no excuse to deny a server their well-earned and deserved wages. "But restaurants should just pay servers more." First of all, it's a social system and one restaurant changing their policies isn't going to work. Second, maintaining a restaurant is expensive, and tipshare goes to more than just the servers. Tip-outs can be killer. "But tips should be proportionate to service." Yeah, but the amount of the bill is directly related to this. The more expensive your experience is, the harder the server has to work. Add that on top of their performance in general and you will NEVER come to a 50-cent tip on nearly $800 unless the server spat in your food in plain ******* view. Don't be ridiculous. Tipping in the United States is rightfully expected, and if you don't do it, you're an asshole. Add that bullshit treatment on top of the stress a typical server is put through and it's no surprise some servers would break their repose. OP - I'm sorry for what happened to you. You deserved better. ETA: Don't get me wrong, the OP deserved to be fired for her behaviour. Servers need to be headstrong throughout everything. But I still sympathise with her. Working for 50 cents when tables of that size tend to stay almost 2 hours, taking up a spot in their section of the restaurant, can ruin a person's wages for the whole night.
I understand that you have come to rely on tips to get by, but tips are not guaranteed. It is the option of the customer to decide if they want to tip you or not. I know the government taxes you, but normal people are not the government and did not come up with the laws and as such, until it says you HAVE to tip, I don't feel the need to tip someone who does not show good service.

they probably should've left a better tip, but at the same time you can't throw quarters at a customers head and not expect to be fired.
For them to leave only 50 cents it was clearly as an insult to the waitress imo.
