Today, my dad bought me a new laptop for my birthday. That's because he wants to use my old laptop for work, which is more expensive, has better specs, runs faster, and has a wider screen than my new computer. I just got a downgraded laptop as my birthday present. FML

Don't give him your old laptop! Keep both. It's a gift, not an exchange.

Why are people so unnecessarily NASTY about FMLs? So what if the OP got a laptop...it doesn't make them spoiled. I would be a little annoyed if I got a laptop and a.) Found out it was an exchange, not a gift and b.) it wasn't as good as the one I had previously. There are all ranges of FML on here...just because they're not ALL from impoverished orphans who get dumped at the altar, doesn't make the other OPs any less deserving. RE-LAX!

FML indeed specially if you paid for your own laptop:))

If your dad's work required an advanced computer, it would be provided for him by his employer. Your dad is a selfish ********. Don't take his shitty computer. Let him have his crappy gift and don't let him take your computer.

whaaa!! new laptop is smaller! get over yourself.

This all depends...Was the better laptop actually yours or was it just the family computer which you usurped as your own? If it's really your dad's and he feels bad for taking it from the home to use at work, than you should be happy that he thought of you enough to repace it, even if it's not as good. If it's rightfully yours because it was gifted to you or you bought it with your own money, you have every reason to simply tell him that you prefer your machine and he's welcome to use the one he bought for work.

OP does call it "my laptop". I wouldn't call my dad's laptop or my family's laptop "my laptop" even if I use it the most.

Well was it technically your dad's to begin with and you just happen to use it most of the time? If that's the case he has every right to take it back. At least he got you something. But if it was really yours, FYL. You don't give gifts to someone and expect something in return.

OP does call it "my laptop". I wouldn't call my dad's laptop or my family's laptop "my laptop" even if I use it the most. So, assuming it is OP's laptop, the dad doesn't have the right to take it from him, he got it for college and needed it (look for his comment), even if it was a gift or OP bought it, the circumstances don't matter, it belonged to OP.

that does suck but most people wouldn't even get a brand new laptop in exchange!!

If the first laptop was a gift as well, STOP YOUR COMPLAINING. Yes, maybe it's not good etiquette to take back a gift, but jesus christ. I haven't received major birthday presents in years, and it's not like laptops are cheap. I'm not quite sure how FML even posted this. It comes across so whiny and spoiled bratty.

then u dont get it. its really bad etiquette 2 take back a gift or replace it w/ something crappy. thats y they're called GIFTS, not EXCHANGES

So would you buy your child something expensive then take back because you want it??? What his dad did was ****** up. You're just jealous because you don't have one. Or didn't at the time.

wtf, you have no idea how great your life is. i was gonna click YDI but you really don't deserve anything if you can't appreciate a laptop at all. people are starving.

OMG I DON'T HAVE NICE THINGS THEREFORE YOU DON'T DESERVE THEM EITHER BAWWWWWWWWW
