Mom: 1 Education: 0
I have been in situations like that many time but I have learned every time that it was my own fault for not saving all the time. I find the keystroke ctrl-s (command-s for Mac) it is useful I usually press it every time I am done a paragraph. So YDI for not saving it... Also if someone else wanted to use the computer I can't believe you didn't even save it then
Maybe this will be one of those times where you luck out and write a better paper the second time around. One can hope right? Either way your step mom clearly needs some education in computer troubleshooting.
I feel if the mother was smart enough to know how to restart the computer then she should have known to ask someone more experienced with a computer before messing with it when there is a possible. "Virus".
Thats happened to me a few times go under "recents," it was more than likely auto saved.
I KNEW there was still something good about using typewriters! Sure, if you make a mistake you have to start the whole page over, but at least THIS sort of thing can't happen. ****, I'm old.
Don't feel too old, Doc. I learned to type on an electronic typewriter. I've always thought it would be a great way to teach kids to pay attention when they type. Old technologies are often the most useful for teaching. And they don't get viruses.
They have typewriters that you can erase/fix mistakes. They are electric but still do the job.
You should always save your files before letting somebody else use the computer; even if that somebody else is your step-mom. Considering you were that far in to your paper, you should have saved before anyway. I hope it doesn't take you too long to retype it.
My thoughts exactly. I get very paranoid letting someone else use my computer because it has all my school stuff on there, and I'm always sure to save. Hopefully it was Microsoft Word, which I'm pretty sure will have saved at least some of it.
And that, my sorry friend, is why and good student compulsively does a Ctrl+S regularly throughout their writing.
Saving is always good.

I'm not certain why you never saved it once. It just seems like the obvious thing to do. There is a chance that the file still exists on your hard drive if you want to search for it. Some word processors create auto recoveries and backups which are sometimes hidden files.
Hopefully your document has auto save function. Or use EasyRecovery. Good luck!
