Ass move
Seriously, WTF is this? Why would you break up with him in front of dozens of people in the first place? Are you too cowardly to go to his house, or make him come to yours? And you told him that you were "only joking" not because you felt sorry for him, and not because you felt guilty, but to save the embarrassment that arose out of your own poor decision-making? YDI every step of the way.
And you've been dating how many weeks? Seriously, never dump someone in public! It doesn't work like it does on TV!
Grow a backbone and dump the dumbass
Ignore the people telling you not to break up with him in public. If he pulls that crap in private, you'll play hell getting him out of the house. Break up in public, then when he sinks to the ground and has his tantrum, walk away and leave him there.
So you thought making people around you think that you're the kind of person that break up as a joke, hurting your boyfriend in the process would be less embarrassing to you than just letting them think you actually broke up with him? Just... wow...
You should have just left him there, acting like an idiot. YDI for telling him you were joking when you weren't. He's the one that should be embarrassed, not you.
