Today, I went to my weekly AA meeting. It was a huge crowd and I was the guest speaker. Not 5 minutes into my speech, I was booed off stage and banned from further attendance because I accidentally wore a Jack Daniel's shirt. FML

You'd think they'd mention getting rid of memorabilia.

I'm not sure why you kept this in the first place.

Why did it take 5 minutes to boo you off?

How does one accidentally wear the wrong shirt? I get it that other people don't plan their outfits out but a little foresight into what is appropriate is common knowledge. It doesn't take a genius to know wearing an alcohol brand t-shirt to an AA meeting is a bad call. So YDI for wearing the wrong shirt but FYL for being banned. Probably a little too harsh of them if it was an honest mistake.

I'm in recovery myself, and while mistakes like that can happen with wearing a shirt or something with drugs or alcohol on it, I am vigilant about making sure I don't wear anything with that stuff on it to a meeting or to a function. However, someone should have pulled you aside either before or after the meeting, called you on your shit and done it that way. I commend you for being willing to share your story!!!

How did you not notice before getting boo'd off the stage that wearing something like that is a bad idea?

You kind of deserve the booing, but being banned from attendance is extremely harsh. You would think that out of anyone, members of AA would be understanding of a little slip-up.

How could you possibly be that stupid?

Just a thought, but if you are in recovery, maybe you should get rid of all the alcohol related swag/trinkets. This includes shirts, hats, wallets, shot classes, drink glasses from the gift sets, etc. Beyond that it is universally stupid to wear a JD shirt to AA!

I understand that maybe you were in a rush and put on the first thing that wasn't wrinkly or dirty without actually paying attention to what was on it. Or maybe that's just a casual shirt you wear often and absent-mindedly put it on out of habit. Either way, if you're going to be hosting a meeting, especially one with people that are dealing with something this difficult, you need to be a lot more conscious of your appearance. No matter in how much of a rush you are, five seconds looking in the mirror to make sure that everything is OK won't kill you. I'm very sorry this happened, but you deserve it.

If your meeting thinks a brand T shirt is going to drag them back to alcoholism, then they're doing AA wrong. You should probably find another class.
